Will a lithium battery fit my golf cart? Tray sizes for 26 cart generations
A lithium battery will fit most golf carts if three things line up: the voltage matches your cart, the pack is no bigger than one documented to fit your exact model and years, and the charging side (onboard computer, charge plug, 12V accessories) is planned. Below are the three checks, then the largest pack documented to fit each of the 26 cart generations we track.
Check 1: the same voltage
Lift the seat and count the batteries. Six 6V batteries make a 36V cart; six 8V or four 12V batteries make a 48V cart. Your lithium pack must match (a 38.4V pack for 36V, a 51.2V pack for 48V). Going from 36V to 48V is not a battery swap: the controller, solenoid and often the motor change too.
Then size the amp-hours for your longest trip with our battery size calculator.
Check 2: the pack must physically fit your tray
Golf cart battery trays were designed around lead-acid batteries, and every make has a different limit. These are the dimensions that most often rule a pack out:
- Width between the frame rails on the Club Car DS and old Carryall (A-frame chassis): long, flat packs don't drop between the rails.
- Depth front-to-back on Yamaha G19, G22 and Drive: the six batteries sit in one row, so the bay is long but shallow.
- Obstacles in the tray: the raised ridge in a 2008+ Club Car Precedent bucket, the controller panel in the middle of a 2004–2008 Precedent, the throttle linkage on old E-Z-GOs.
- Height under the seat: lead-acid golf cart batteries stand about 10.9 in tall, so a pack up to that height clears the seat.
In the table, "documented to fit" means a brand lists the pack for that cart or an owner reports it in place, with a link to the source. Our fit rule is simple: a pack no larger in footprint than one documented to fit (either way round) and no taller than the stock batteries fits with a hold-down bracket.
Lithium battery fit by golf cart
Dimensions are length × width × height in inches. "Kits that fit" counts the kits in our list of the same voltage that the brand lists for the cart or that fit by size.

How to measure your battery tray
- Switch the cart to Tow/Maintenance and remove one battery to see the floor of the tray.
- Measure the usable length and width of the floor, and note anything that sticks up: ridges, the controller panel, hold-down rods, cables.
- Measure the height from the tray floor to the underside of the seat frame.
- Compare with the pack's length, width and height, both ways round. Leave about half an inch for cables and the hold-down.
- Check where the pack's terminals end up: the main cables must reach them without strain.
Check 3: the charging and electrical side
- Onboard computer (OBC): Club Car carts from about 1995 to 2013 have one, and it stops a lithium charger from working. Plan the bypass.
- Charge receptacle: the new lithium charger needs the plug of your cart (Club Car round 3-pin, E-Z-GO triangle, Yamaha 2- or 3-pin…).
- 12V accessories: lights and horn need a 48V-to-12V converter if the kit doesn't include one. See chargers and parts.
- Controller amps: a pack rated well below what your controller can pull will cut out on hills.
The full list of steps is in our guide on how to convert a golf cart to lithium.
Carts that came with lithium
Club Car Tempo and Onward with factory lithium, and E-Z-GO ELiTE carts, have a battery that talks to the controller. A conversion kit can't replace it; you need a replacement made for that system. Of the 26 generations above, 24 are conversion candidates.
