Before you buy

Converting the Club Car DS (1982–1995 (36V)): what's different

The 36-volt DS is the oldest cart we cover, and the one where the controller matters most: early carts use a resistor / V-Glide drive with no current limit, later ones a Curtis 1204 rated 325 amps. A 36V (38.4V) lithium pack keeps the cart's whole electrical system unchanged — don't move to 48V without changing the controller, motor wiring and charger.

Not sure it's this one? Compared with the Club Car DS (1995–2013 (48V)): it runs at 48V instead of 36V, so it takes different kits; its factory batteries are six 8V lead-acid batteries (a four-12V layout was offered from 2007) (here: six 6V lead-acid batteries (not confirmed by a Club Car document)); charging differs — onboard computer (OBC) present — it can block a lithium charger; plan a bypass (here: no onboard computer); the charge receptacle is a Round 3-pin Club Car 48V receptacle (here: 2-prong "crowfoot" 36V receptacle); 6 kits in our list fit this one but not that one, and 3 the other way round.

How to tell it's this one

  • Six 6-volt batteries under the seat (check the labels: "6V").
  • Built from 1982 to about 1995; sources disagree on the last 36V year.
  • A 2-prong "crowfoot" charge receptacle.

The battery bay

Club Car never published the bay size. The factory batteries sit in three pairs on the A-frame chassis, and the one pack sold specifically for this cart — a 38V 105Ah DS bundle — measures 13.37 × 10.18 × 10.75 in. Long, flat 20-inch "universal" packs are the size that owners of later DS carts report does not drop between the frame rails.

Controller and charging

  • No onboard computer: any 36V lithium charger (43.8V) can be wired to the existing receptacle.
  • Resistor-drive carts (1980s to early 1990s) pull current with no electronic limit — choose a pack with at least 200A continuous.
  • The Curtis 1204 fitted to solid-state 36V carts is listed at 325A.

What owners get wrong

  • Confirm 36V before buying: some DS carts were converted to 48V by a previous owner.
  • Aluminium battery supports on carts this old are often corroded — inspect them before bolting a new hold-down to them.
  • Budget for a 36V-to-12V converter if you run lights.

What is the best lithium battery kit for the Club Car DS?

For the Club Car DS, among kits the brand lists for this cart, the Epoch Batteries 36V 100Ah Big Box complete kit has our highest score. The best choice still depends on your budget and terrain — see our three picks above.

Will a "universal" lithium battery fit my Club Car DS?

On the Club Car DS, only if it is small enough: the DS bay is smaller than the Precedent's, which is why brands sell compact "Mini" packs for it. Compare the kit size on each card with your tray.
