Converting the Club Car Precedent (2004–mid 2008): what's different

Early Precedents (2004 to mid-2008) run on four 12-volt batteries split around a controller panel that sits in the middle of the tray. That panel is why many long "universal" packs don't fit this cart without moving the controller — and why it gets its own page.

Not sure it's this one? Compared with the Club Car Precedent (mid 2008–2013): its factory batteries are six 8V lead-acid batteries in a molded bucket with dividers (here: four 12V lead-acid batteries); 0 kits in our list fit this one but not that one, and 14 the other way round.

Not sure it's this one? Compared with the Club Car Precedent (2014 and newer): its factory batteries are six 8V lead-acid batteries in a molded bucket with dividers (here: four 12V lead-acid batteries); charging differs — no OBC — ERIC charging (some 2014 carts still have an OBC) (here: onboard computer (OBC) present — bypass needed for lithium charging); 0 kits in our list fit this one but not that one, and 14 the other way round.

How to tell it's this one

  • Four 12-volt batteries, two on each side of a central panel with the controller.
  • Built 2004 to about March 2008; carts from mid-2008 switched to six 8V batteries.
  • Onboard computer (OBC) and a round 3-pin receptacle.

The battery bay

Each side of the central panel holds two 12V batteries. One maker sells a separate kit for 2004–2008 Precedents built around its 13.14 × 12.24 × 10.15 in pack. An owner of a 2007 Precedent moved the controller to the right side to centre a larger lithium pack — expect that work with anything around 18 inches long.

Controller and charging

  • The OBC must be bypassed or removed for lithium charging.
  • The IQ controller is listed at 250 to 350A depending on the source.
  • Factory cables are three 23.5 in jumpers: the new pack will need its own short cables.

What owners get wrong

  • Count your batteries before you buy: four 12V means this page; six 8V means the 2008–2013 Precedent.
  • Compact packs that slide into one side of the tray avoid moving the controller.
  • Keep the hold-down rod (13⅞ in on this generation) only if the kit is designed to use it.
